MacKay, Women's 200 Medley Relay win medals on Day 1

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Scott MacKay won the silver medal on the 3-meter diving board and the women's 200 yard medley relay team took the bronze to highlight the first day of the 2016 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.

The first All-SCIAC race came from the young quartet of Mary Hanna, Rachel Miyoga, Rachel Fox and Kayla Yip. The four Leopards combined to post a time of 1:51.62, outtouching Occidental by .30 seconds to place third. The result is all the more impressive given that Fox and Yip are freshmen and Hanna and Miyoga are sophomores. La Verne took second in this race a year ago and that relay squad was filled with some of the best swimmers in La Verne history.

The 3-meter board came down to MacKay and Patrick Quarberg of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Quarberg just edged MacKay, 499.60-488.15. Lucas Reddell of Cal Lutheran was a distant third with 355.50.

The men's 200 medley relay team of CJ Woodward, Harry Bennett, Timothy Polman and Daniel Carpenter was on pace to set a new school record but a false start on the last leg cost it.

Fox, Miranda Chavez, Krislyn Cha and Karla Fuertez came within two seconds of the school record in the 800 freestyle relay and combined to go 8:03.99, finishing in seventh.

The teams are back in action with preliminaries at 9 a.m.
