Carpenter, Cha, Polman break records on Day 3

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Daniel Carpenter, Krislyn Cha and Timothy Polman broke three more La Verne records on the third day of the 2016 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Chapman, on Saturday at Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.

Daniel Carpenter went 1:42.26 in the men's 200 yard freestyle in the morning prelim to break the old mark of 1:42.36 set by Shane Hunter in 2012. Carpenter went into the evening seeded fourth in the event and went for broke in the final, coming out of the 100 yard mark at 47.10 second to lead the field. But the junior ran out of gas in the back half of the race and finished ninth with a time of 1:46:03 in the championship final.

Krislyn Cha lowered her own bar in one of the most grueling events, the women's 400 individual medley. She touched the wall at 4:47.99 to finish 13th overall in the event and beat her old record by almost a second.

Polman went a crisp 51.87 in the men's 100 butterfly to surpass the old record set by Matt Frenken in 2002. He and CJ Woodward both came in the evening and finished 14th (52.03) and 16th (52.54), respectively.

Scott MacKay was the top-seeded diver on the 1-meter board but came in second in the final with a score of 498.40, just .95 points behind the winner.

Harry Bennett made the NCAA 'B' cut in the men's 100 yard breaststroke with a morning swim of 57.30 and just missed out on the podium in the championship, placing fourth wit ha time of 56.73.

Freshman Rachel Fox finished ninth overall in the women's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.29 after turning in 1:07.50 in the prelims. Miranda Chavez finished second in the consolation final at 1:08.46.

The Leopards are back in action tomorrow for the final day of competition.
