Swimming and Diving beats Oxy, drops to Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. — Timothy Polman won three events for the men, Rachel Fox won two for the women and both La Verne swimming and diving teams beat Occidental but came up short against Redlands on Saturday at Thompson Aquatic Center.

"We had a solid day and split with Redlands and Oxy," La Verne coach Pat Skehan said. "All in all it was a good day considering we have done doubles (practices) for 11 days with no breaks."

The Leopards won 11 of the 26 events contested at the meet.

Polman helped the men's team get off to a good start as the freestyle anchor leg in the 200 yard medley relay. Polman posted the fastest freestyle split (21.26) to overtake Redlands in the final 50 yards and the Leopards won the race with a time of 1 minute, 39.69 seconds.

Polman claimed two individual events as well. The senior was the only swimmer to go under 22 seconds in the 50 freestyle at 21.98 and edged teammate Daniel Carpenter in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.35. Carpenter finished at 48.88.

Brandon Pon comfortably won the 1000 and the 500 yard freestyle. The sophomore won the 1000 with a tie of 10:11.54 including an incredible 26.79 in the last 50 and was the only swimmer to come in at under the 5-minute mark in the 500 (4.59.48).

Harry Bennett took the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.87 and swam the breaststroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay.

Freshman diver Andrew Tompkins won the 3-meter with a total score of 256.80 and finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 225.60. Both scores were his season bests.

Fox and Kayla Yip highlighted the women's competition. Fox won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:27.04 and led off the winning 400 freestyle relay that touched the at 3:55.27. Fox split 57.84, the fastest on the team.

Kayla Yip won the 100 butterfly, touching at 1:02.86. She was narrowly edged in the 50 freestyle and finished second with a time of 25.97.

The women's 200 medley relay tam of Mary Hanna, Miranda Chavez, Krislyn Cha and Yip finished second with a time of 1:56.16.
