Men's swimming and diving tops Chapman, Women beat Mills

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's swimming and diving team topped Chapman by a score of 139-44 while the women lost to the Panthers 146-90 on Saturday at Las Flores Park. The women defeated Mills 180-38. Mills does not field a men's team.

The men won every event except for the 200 yard butterfly, which the Leopards didn't contest.

Daniel Carpenter, Timothy Polman and CJ Woodward led the way with three wins each. Carpenter swam the freestyle leg of the winning 400 medley relay that touched at 3:41.27, won the 50 freestyle at 21.88 and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:28.94) that capped off the meet. Woodward swam the backstroke leg of the medley relay and the second leg of the freestyle relay while adding a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.20. Polman registered two individual wins, claiming the 200 freestyle (1:47.37) and the 100 freestyle (48.31). He also anchored the freestyle relay.

Andrew Tompkins won both the 3-meter and the 1-meter diving uncontested. He scored 231.70 in on the 3-meter board and 241.50 on the 1-meter.

Brandon Pon won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:01.69 and the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:01.75.

Harry Bennett added a win in the 200 individual medley (2:05.94) and Bryan Poole took the 200 breaststroke (2:19.53).

Miranda Chavez, Rachel Fox and Mary Hanna led the women's team. The trio, combined with Kayla Yip, won the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:13.93 and each claimed an individual win. Chavez won the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:33.08, Fox took the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:25.89 and Hanna claimed the 200 individual medley at 2:17.63.

Before the meet, the Leopards celebrated the careers of their 13 seniors with a brief ceremony: Harry Bennett, Gabriela Biedebach, Daniel Carpenter, Krislyn Cha, Miranda Chavez, Erin Lobato, Lora Marquez-Salgado, Andrew Okimura, Delaney Poe, Timothy Polman, Bryan Poole, Matthew Valencia.

The Leopards return to action on Jan. 28 for a dual meet against Pomona-Pitzer.
