Swimming & Diving wraps up regular season at Caltech

PASADENA — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams wrapped up their regular season with a dual meet against Caltech on Saturday.

The women dominated the Beavers, claiming nine of 13 events en route to a 157-56 win. Kayla Yip led the way with two individual wins and two relay wins. Rachel Fox and Rachel Miyoga were also on the relay teams and each added an individual win.

Mary Hanna, Fox, Yip and Miyoga combined to go 1:55.72 in the 200 medley relay to kick off the meet and the quartet came back to claim the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.99 to cap the meet.

Yip added individual wins in the 50 freestyle (26.24) and the 200 individual medley (2:18.24). Fox cruised to a win in the 200 freestyle (2:04.50) and Miyoga won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:31.79.

Krislyn Cha won the 100 individual medley, touching at 1:05.89. Lora Marquez-Salgado took the 100 backstroke at 1:09.71 and Ashley Bennett won the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:04.82.

Highlighting the men was Andrew Tompkins, who tallied a total six-dive score of 285.55 on the 1-meter board to break Scott Mackay's previous record of 279.15 to meet the NCAA regional qualifying standard. He also won the 3-meter with a total score of 229.55.

Brandon Pon won the 200 and 500 freestyle at 1:49.83 and 4:59.58, respectively.

Daniel Carpenter took the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.08 and Joey Sabers added a win in the 100 butterfly at 52.81.

"It's always difficult to race well as you start a taper but I was very happy wit ha lot of the swims we had," La Verne coach Pat Skehan said. "Andrew as a freshman now holds both dual meet diving records and is set up well for the championships."

The Leopards will compete in the SCIAC Championships on Feb. 15-18 at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce.
