COMMERCE, Calif. — Timothy Polman took the silver in the 50 yard freestyle in a school-record time and Andrew Tompkins won the bronze on the 3-meter diving board to highlight the second day of the 2017 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
Polman broke La Verne's 50 freestyle record in the morning prelims, going 20.69 to go into the championship final seeded second. The senior lowered the mark further in the final, touching the wall at a blistering 20.65. But the seeds held, and Pomona-Pitzer's Adrian Hui edged Polman with a time of 20.65. Polman's time is also good for an NCAA 'B' cut (20.70).
Tompkins kicked off the finals session with La Verne's first medal of the championships. The freshman tallied a total score of 428.25 in an 11-dive program to finish third and qualified for the NCAA regional meet.
Rachel Fox broke the women's 500 freestyle record while coming in eighth overall. The sophomore finished with a time of 5:12.46, lowering Allison Alastuey's old record of 5:13.99 set in 2000.
Fox combined with Mary Hanna, Rachel Miyoga and Kayla Yip in the 200 freestyle relay and the quartet finished fifth with a time of 1:39.30.
The men broke the varsity record in the 200 freestyle relay and also finished fifth, with Polman, CJ Woodward, Joey Sabers and Carpenter turning in a time of 1:24.72.
The championships continue tomorrow with prelims at 9 a.m.
