COMMERCE, Calif. — Joey Sabers broke the La Verne school record in the 100 yard butterfly and Timothy Polman set a new mark in the 200 freestyle to highlight the third day of the 2017 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
Polman went 1:42.14 in the morning prelims to lower the record set by Daniel Carpenter in last year's conference championships (1:42.16). He went into the evening final seeded third but went out too fast in the first 100 yards and ran out of gas to finish ninth. Carpenter finished seventh with a tie of 1:42.95.
Sabers touched at 51.50 in the consolation final of the 100 butterfly to finish second and 11th overall. Polman held the previous mark at 51.87 set at last year's SCIAC championships.
Harry Bennett took second in the consolation final of the men's 100 breaststroke at 58.58.
Kayla Yip finished second in the consolation final of the women's 100 butterfly at 59.14.
Rachel Fox, who broke a 17-year record in the 500 freestyle last night, finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.67. Miranda Chavez won the consolation final with a time of 1:09.23.
Mary Hanna added a second place finish in the 100 backstroke at 59.74.
The women's 400 medley relay team of Hanna, Fox, Yip and Rachel Miyoga finished ninth, touching the wall at 4:06.96. The men's quartet of CJ Woodward, Harry Bennett, Sabers and Carpenter came in eighth at 3:32.23.
The Leopards conclude the championships tomorrow.
