Tompkins medals, two more records fall on final day of SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. — Timothy Polman came in second in the 100 yard freestyle in another record time, Andrew Tompkins took third in 1-meter diving and the men's 400 freestyle relay team capped off the 2017 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championshps with a new school record on Saturday night at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.

Polman went 45.82 in the 100 freestyle preliminary to break his third La Verne record of the championships and lowered it further to 45.79 in the final to finish second overall. He broke the 50 freestyle record (20.65) on Thursday and the 200 freestyle record (1:42.14) yesterday.

Tompkins scored an 11-dive total of 461.00 to place third on the 1-meter board and earned his second medal of the championships. He placed third in 3-meter on Thursday. The freshman will head to the NCAA regionals on Feb. 26-27.

The men's 400 free relay quartet of Daniel Carpenter, Joey Sabers, Polman and CJ Woodward lowered the La Verne standard in the event with a time of 3:07.90 and finished seventh.

Carpenter also made the championship final in the 100 freestyle and finished ninth with a time of 46.40.

Brandon Pon, who took the bronze the 1650 freestyle last year, finished sixth in the event tonight with a time of 16:15.72

Harry Bennett won the consolation championship of the men's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.83.

In the women's 200 breaststroke, both Rachel Fox and Miranda Chavez made it to consolation finals and finished 12th overall (2:30.36) and 16th (2:32.77), respectively.

Kayla Yip took second in the consolation final of the women's 200 butterfly with a time of 2:14.89 and Krislyn Cha finished tied for fifth at 2:19.35.

Mary Hanna was 13th overall in the 200 backstorke, touching at 2:10.59.

The men finished fifth as a team with 347 total points and the women finished eighth with 258.5.

The Leopards now await the potential selections of NCAA National Championship qualifiers, set to be revealed on Feb. 27.
