La Verne women beat Caltech, Pon wins two events

LA VERNE, Calif. — Junior Brandon Pon won a pair of events for the men's team and the women's team scored a win as the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams hosted the Caltech Beavers Saturday at Las Flores Park.

Men: Caltech 146, La Verne 73

Kayla Yip led the La Verne women's team with two individual wins. Yip touched at 25.68 in the 50 freestyle, just edging out Caltech's Angelina Pan (25.86). Her second win came in the 100 butterfly (1:03.26) with Daliah Mendoza finishing second (1:08.71).

Pon, fresh off a win in the 1000 freestyle against No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Whittier, continued his success in the distance events with a win in the 1650 freestyle. The junior got off to a fast start and cruised to a win with a time of 17:00.65, besting the next finisher by more than a minute. Pon added another win in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.48.

Ashley Meza had a big day winning the 100 freestyle and teaming up with Ashley MacAskill, Ashley Bennett, and Mendoza to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Andrew Tompkins went two for two in his events, winning both the one-meter and three-meter dives.
