Swim and Dive compete at Pomona-Pitzer
CLAREMONT, Calif. —  Rachel Fox won the 500 yard freestyle, Brandon Pon performed well in his first ever 200 butterfly, and Kayla Yip had strong finishes in the 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly as the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams competed against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, ranked No. 11 for men and 13 for women nationally.
 
"For us, even though it was a very tough meet against one of the top teams in the nation I felt we swam well," said La Verne Head Coach Pat Skehan.
 
Pomona-Pitzer won the meet 239-53 in the women's competition and 232-34 on the men's side.
 
Fox led nearly the entire way in the 500 free on her way to a winning time of 5:37.57.
 
Yip earned two top-three finishes in the meet. The junior touched second in the 50 butterfly with a time of 28.16 and finished third in the 50 freestyle at 25.75.
 
Pon, usually a distance specialist, showcased his versatility scoring a third place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.27.
 
Freshman Lorenzo DeLeon scored a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 56.44.
 
CJ Woodward finished fourth in the 50 yard fly with a fast time of 24.61.
 
On the boards, Amber DeLoye added two top-three finishes. In the three meter she finished third with a score of 145.50. She finished second in the one meter scoring 157.50
 
"It is a tough time of the year to be racing as everyone is training so hard. We will continue to train hard and we'll have a little fun next week against the alumni," said Skehan.
 
The Leopards competed against Chapman, Biola, and Mills Friday afternoon in a dual meet competition against each school. 
 
The La Verne women's team went 1-2 beating Mills and falling to SCIAC opponent Chapman and NCAA Division II opponent Biola.
 
The men's team went 0-2 in the meet.
 
Next Meet: The Leopards break for the rest of the month and return to action on February 3 when they travel to Taylor Pool to take on the Occidental College Tigers at 11 a.m.
