Pon sets record on final day of SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. — Brandon Pon swam the best 1650 yard freestyle in Leopards' history as the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams closed out the 2018 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Pon closed out his week with an All-SCIAC performance in his best event. The junior, who set the previous La Verne record as a freshman with a time of 16:04.49, took second in the event setting the new program record at 15:52.84. Pon also holds the La Verne records in the 500 yard freestyle and the 1000 yard freestyle.

In the women's 1650 freestyle, Rachel Fox took 17th with a time of 19:15.06 and teammate Ashley Bennett took 20th touching at a personal record 19:53.28.

"I am so proud of this group," said La Verne Swimming and Diving Head Coach Pat Skehan. "Over 90 percent of our athletes swam personal bests at this week. Our seniors swam great and I will be sad to see them go."

Senior Mary Hanna made another consolation final in her final meet as a Leopard. The Claremont native took 14th overall in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:10.49. Hanna made history on day two of the championships, setting a La Verne record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:11.84.

Kayla Yip had a strong finish in the 200 butterfly. The junior took fifth in the consolation final, finishing with a time of 2:14.43.

The women's 400 freestyle relay team of Hanna, Rachel Miyoga, Ashley MacAskill, and Kayla Yip took eighth, finishing with a time of 3:41.88, almost four seconds faster than their seed time.

In the men's 400 freestyle relay, CJ Woodward, Kristofer Grigorian, Lorenzo DeLeon, and Pon finished ninth with a time of 3:16.91, their best time in the event this season.
