Swim and Dive teams earn exciting wins over Poets

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne men's and women's swim and dive teams scored exciting wins over the Whittier College Poets Saturday afternoon.

Men: La Verne 124, Whittier 121

Women: La Verne 148, Whittier 138

On the men's side it came down to the final event of the day, whichever team touched first in the 4x400 freestyle relay would leave Las Flores Park with the win. The Leopards' squad was up for the challenge. Brandon Pon jumped in first and stayed close with Whittier's Michael Laws.

Kristofer Grigorian swam the second leg and stayed neck and neck with the Poets' Devin Gaude. Sophomore Lorenzo DeLeon jumped into the pool next and pulled ahead by over a second at the 250 yard mark. DeLeon extended the Leopards' lead to just under five seconds when anchor leg CJ Woodward dove into the water. Woodward did his job, finishing fast, clocking in at 3:22.38 to give the Leopards the win.

Pon opened his individual performance win a win in the 1000 freestyle, touching at 10:16.06. Pon owns the La Verne record in the event with a time of 9:33.39. Later in the day, he posted a win in the 500 freestyle finishing with a time of 5:00.49.

DeLeon added a pair of wins earlier in the day, first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.45 and later in the 200 backstroke at 2:02.62.

Grigorian got out fast in the 50 freestyle and held on for a win at 23.23. Woodward finished first in the 100 butterfly touching at 55.96.

The women's squad started the swim portion of the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team made up of Alondra Camacho, Rachel Fox, Kayla Yip, and Skylar Bowles finished with a time of 1:55.63.

Camacho, just a freshman added another win in the 100 backstroke, touching at 1:01.64, just six one-hundredths of a second in front of Whittier's Lexi Mauldin. She racked her second individual win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:16.33

Fox, a senior, scored two wins of her own, one in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.53 and another in the 500 freestyle at 5:35.94. Yip touched first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:22.55, winning the event by over ten seconds. She added another win in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.74.

Next Meet: The Leopards will next compete at the annual Collegiate Winter Invitational beginning on November 30. The meet will be held at the South Gate Swim Stadium.
