Swim and Dive posts solid times on day 2 of Winter Invite

SOUTH GATE, CA — The University of La Verne swimming and diving teams continued to show improvement on day two of the Collegiate Winter Invite.

The men's squad posted big time performances in the two relays held Saturday night. La Verne closed the night with a third place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay with Trevor Ichiki, Lorenzo DeLeon, Kristofer Grigorian, and Brandon Pon touching at 7:23.27. DeLeon, Pon, CJ Woodward, and Pon also added a fifth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay, with a time of 1:42.34.

The Leopards held onto second place overall in the meet with 817 points, trailing only NCAA Division II Biola.

DeLeon had another solid day individually during Saturday's finals. The sophomore took third in the 400 yard individual medley, clocking in with a time of 4:24.14. He added a fourth place finish later in the night in the 100 yard backstroke at 54.35.

Woodward also made the finals in the 100 backstroke, taking eighth with a time of 55.58. His best individual performance of the day came in the 100 yard butterfly where he scored a  fifth place finish, improving on his prelim time by nearly a second to finish at 53.53.

Pon made the A final for the 200 yard freestyle, finishing eighth overall with a time of 1:51.05. Gavin Sato got in on the action in the 100 yard breaststroke, earning a spot in the A final and finishing with a time of 1:05.84. good enough for seventh place. 

On the women's side, Rachel Fox earned a seventh place spot in the B final for the 100 yard breaststroke touching at 1:11.75. The Leopards took ninth in the 800 freestyle relay with the team of Fox, Alondra Camacho, Kayla Yip, and Roxanna Ramirez-Recinos coming in at 8:21.12. The same group opened the evening with a ninth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay, posting a time of 1:52.81.

Earlier in the day, diver Sara Bartelt finished fifth in the three-meter dive with 166.90 points.  

La Verne concludes the 2018 Collegiate Winter Invite tomorrow with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals taking place at 5 p.m.
