Pon, Fox win consolation final

COMMERCE, CA — Seniors Brandon Pon and Rachel Fox highlighted led the University of La Verne swimming and diving teams with record performances on day two of the SCIAC Swimming Championships.

Pon, La Verne's distance specialist, broke one of his program records on Friday. The La Verne native beat his own school record in the 500 yard freestyle, which he previously set at the 2016 SCIAC Championships, when he won the consolation final with a time of 4:34.94.

Pon holds the La Verne records in the 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle, and 1650 freestyle.

Fox also added a highlight performance on Friday. The senior swam the second fastest time in La Verne history in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:14.10, winning the consolation final.

In the relays, the Leopards swam season bests in both the men's and women's 200 yard freestyle relays. The women's squad of Carissa Martinez, Miguel Espinosa, Kylie Hicks, and Kirsten Knobloch finished with a time of 1:49.98, and the men's team of Gavin Sato, Miguel Espinosa, Gavin Volkov, and Joshua Turner turned in a time of 1:38.38.

"We are having a super meet. Every swimmer has had a season best and almost everyone has had at least one lifetime best. The majority of our swimmers have had a lifetime best in every event they've swum," said head coach Pat Skehan.

The Leopards continue the SCIAC Championships tomorrow with prelims beginning at 9 a.m and finals at 5 p.m.
