Swim and Dive Teams Looks Sharp Against Whittier

LA VERNE, CA — The University of La Verne of La Verne men's swim and dive team scored a one-point win and the women's team stayed close with the visiting Whitter Poets in their SCIAC home opener Saturday at Las Flores Park.

Lorenzo De Leon and Trevor Ichiki led the way for the men's team win with each swimmer scoring two individual wins and swimming a leg in an important 400 medley relay victory.

De Leon touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.91) and the 200 backstroke (2:01.69), and Ichkiki added wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:26.07) and 500 freestyle (4:57.56).

The pair along with Brian McAteer and anchor Gavin Sato combined for a time 3:49.82 in their 400 medley relay win.

McAteer added an individual win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.07 and made it a 1-2 La Verne finish in the 200 individual medley when he touched at 2:06.57 behind De Leon.

Senior captain Gavin Volkov got in on the action with a win in the 200 freestyle, touching at 2:03.58.

"The men did a great job stepping up and scoring points," said La Verne Swim and Dive Head Coach Pat Skehan. "Every single guy on the team found a way to contribute. Led by captains Gavin Volkov and Lorenzo De Leon I saw the men take risks and challenge each other as well as the Poets. It was great to watch."

Jessica Argelander, fresh off of earning SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors, led the women's squad with wins in the 50 freestyle (24.55) and 100 freestyle (53.95). The junior currently ranks third in the SCIAC in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Samantha Szok added a win in the 200 butterfly coming in at 2:30.73 and finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:39.52.

Kira Degelsmith led the Leopards off the boards with a win in the one-meter dive with a score of 150.10.

"It was a very close meet for both the men and the women," said Skehan. "Everyone scored points which really kept it close. We saw a lot of season-best times which gets me excited for the Winter Invite coming up."

Next Meet

The Leopards take a break from SCIAC action and will be back in the water next at the annual Collegiate Winter Invite. The meet will run from December 6-8 at East Los Angeles College.
