Claremont-Mudd-Scripps used an early scoring run in the first half and maintained a comfortable margin throughout to earn a 73-60 triumph over the University of La Verne in SCIAC women's basketball action Thursday night at Frantz Athletic Court.
La Verne faced an early 16-4 deficit and trailed 35-25 at the half. CMS continued to apply pressure in the second half as it maintained a double-digit advantage, leading by as many as 20 points on its way to victory.
Despite 12 three-pointers for the game, the Leopards were held to 32.8% shooting (22-67) and were out-rebounded 45-26. The Athenas were consistent from the field, shooting 56.0% in the first frame while connecting on 59.1% in the second stanza to finish at 57.4% (27-47) overall.
The Athenas (14-8, 8-3 SCIAC) received a virtuoso performance from forward Frannie Hemmelgarn, who tallied game-highs of 30 points and 15 rebounds. Hemmelgarn finished 12-18 from the field and 6-8 from the free throw line. Kalika Tullock tallied 16 points for CMS.
La Verne (5-17, 3-8 SCIAC) was led in scoring by Brittni Tapia who totaled 14 points, connecting on four three-pointers on the night. Amanda Copas added 13 points.
The Leopards continue league competition this weekend as they play host Pomona-Pitzer Saturday in a 5:00 pm start as the squad promotes "Breast Cancer Awarness Night" at Frantz Athletic Court.
