Leo women's basketball squad wins overtime thriller at Redlands

REDLANDS- The University of La Verne women's basketball team emerged with a 73-70 overtime win at the University of Redlands Saturday.

A first half full of lead changes saw the Leos (9-5, 4-1 SCIAC) take a 15-14 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining before heading into the break with a 31-26 advantage. But the Bulldogs (12-3, 5-1 SCIAC) fought back, retaking the lead early in the second half and extending it to  58-49 with just over five minutes remaining. But a 15-6 Leopard run, including a three-pointer from senior guard/forward Lindsey Foster with 15 seconds remaining, forced overtime.

After falling behind early in extra time, La Verne tied the match with just over two minutes remaining as part of a 7-2 run to secure the victory.

Foster recorded a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Shannon Irwin poured in 17 points while junior point guard Tiffany Hicks contributed 16 points off the bench. Junior point guard Riki Murakami dished out three assists and eight points and senior forward Teresa Fatai grabbed 10 boards.

The Leopards shot 31.3 percent (21-67) from the field, including 50 percent from behind the arc (5-10). The Bulldogs held a narrow rebounding edge (53-51) but La Verne won the turnover margin (12-10).

The Leopards will take the court Thursday in Orange with a matchup against Chapman University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
