La Verne rallies for win over Sagehens

CLAREMONT- The University of La Verne women's basketball squad rallied from a first-half deficit to defeat Pomona-Pitzer 68-65 in overtime Saturday.

The Leopards (10-7, 5-3 SCIAC) led through the first ten minutes of play, but a 10-0 Sagehen run put Pomona-Pitzer (6-9, 4-4 SCIAC) up by four with just over seven minutes remaining in the first period. More back-and-forth action ensued, with the Sagehens holding a 30-24 lead at the break.

The deficit would reach double digits early in the second half before a Leo comeback. Sophomore center Emily Myers and sophomore point guard Shannon Irwin put up nine points apiece in the final period before a Jasmine Bush free throw tied the game at 59 with 21 seconds remaining before heading into overtime.

Pomona-Pitzer would go up by three in the first minute of extra time, but the Leopard defense clamped down while junior point guards Tiffany Hicks and Riki Murakami supplied seven of the Leos' nine overtime points to secure the win.

Myers put up a double-double, scoring 17 points and snagging 11 rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Gaby Moura-Hayes chipped in 12 points, while Hicks supplied five assists and three steals. The Leos shot 33.3 percent (25-75) from the field and won the turnover battle 21-13. Both teams grabbed 47 boards.

The Leopards will travel to Pasadena Thursday to face Caltech. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
