Women's Basketball falls to DeSales, 69-50

LAS VEGAS — Offensive rebounds and three-pointers cost the University of La Verne women's basketball team in a 69-50 loss to DeSales on the first day of D3hoops.com Classic at South Point Arena on Tuesday morning.

La Verne falls to 2-5 while DeSales improves to 5-4.

DeSales collected a staggering 20 offensive rebounds that led to 27 second-chance points and went 7-of-18 from beyond the arc to run away with the win. Second chance points differential proved the final difference as the Leopards scored eight off their offensive rebounds.

DeSales' Morgan McCollian opened up the first quarter with nine points, while Noelle Cobb, Faye Osburn, Emily Myers and Shannon Irwin kept the scoring balanced for the Leopards. Both teams went into the second quarter with a score of 19-19.

But Myers picked up her second foul late in the first and DeSales went on a 20-7 run to close out the half fueled by McColligan and Kaitlin Kelly's shooting from behind the arc.

Three straight steals by DeSales proved costly for La Verne coming out of the break and a third foul sent Myers back to the bench for much of the third quarter while Kelly stayed hot for the Bulldogs.

Irwin finished with 16 points and five boards, Cobb tallied nine points and seven boards, and Osburn chipped in eight points.

McCollian finished with a double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds and Kelly scored all 15 of her points from behind the arc.

La Verne will face St. Vincent tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the second day of the D3hoops.com Classic.
