Women's Basketball falls short at Oxy, 64-61

LOS ANGELES — Brianna Bishop had 16 points off the bench, Emily Myers notched another double-double but the University of La Verne women's basketball team was out-executed down the stretch in a 64-61 loss to Occidental on Tuesday night at Rush Gymnasium.

La Verne falls to 3-12 overall and 2-5 in SCIAC play. Occidental improves to 6-11 and 3-6.

Bishop was perfect in the second half as she went 3-for-3, including two 3-pointers, and made 2-of-2 free throws to help pull the Leopards even after the Tigers grabbed an eight-point advantage at halftime.

Faye Osburn hit a 3-pointer to give the Leopards a 55-52 lead with 5:44 remaining in the game and made a layup at 4:07 to tie it at 57-57. But Paige Waters made a jumper in the lane and Dru Ishibashi converted two tough shots to put the Tigers up by six points to 1:38 to go.

The Leopards had a chance to send the game to overtime but couldn't find a good look.

Bishop went 5-for-8, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, to lead La Verne's offense.

Myers hauled in a career-high 19 rebounds to go along with 12 points but Oxy was able to offset her contribution with Grace Baranowski's 12 rebounds and Waters' 11 points off the bench.

Shannon Irwin had 13 points, three rebounds and four assists, and Noelle Cobb chipped in 10 points.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
