Women's Basketball cruises past Caltech, 73-57

PASADENA — Shannon Irwin made plays all over the court, Emily Myers posted a double-double and Noelle Cobb scored 18 points as the University of La Verne women's basketball team beat Caltech, 73-57, on Tuesday night at Braun Gymnasium.

La Verne improves to 5-17 and 4-10 in SCIAC play. Caltech falls to 2-21 and remains winless in the SCIAC at 0-14.

The Leopards used a 12-2 run spanning from the final minute in the second quarter through the first three minutes of the third quarter to take a 16-point lead and never looked back.

Irwin bookended the run with a pair of layups in the final 40 seconds of the first half and wrapped up the stretch with two free throws and another layup.

The Beavers trimmed the deficit to a single digit on two different occasions, the later of which was at the 7:31 mark in the fourth quarter when Nika Haleftiras converted an and-1 to get the Beavers within 53-44. But the Leopards stamped out any chance of a comeback with with an 8-2 run to stretch the lead back to 15 and held on.

Irwin packed the stat sheet with 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Myers scored 13 points and hauled in 11 rebounds while Noelle Cobb pitched in five rebounds, three assists and four steals to go along with her 18 points.

La Verne decisively won the hustle points battle. The Leopards collected 20 offensive rebounds—exactly half of all their misses—and turned them into 16 second chance points while the Beavers managed seven. The Leopards also scored 16 points off turnovers, a plus-8 advantage.

Kate Lews led the Beavers offensively, recording 17 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Haleftiras finished with 14.

The Leoapards are back in action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer.
