Women's Basketball drops to Whitworth, 90-70

LA VERNE, Calif. — Brianna Bishop, Noelle Cobb and Faye Osburn all reached double figures in scoring for the La Verne women's basketball team but it was not enough to stop Whitworth in a 90-70 loss on Wednesday at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

Whitworth's Grace Douglas scored a game-high 29 points while Callie Harwood had 23 points and nine rebounds. Erika Kuehn scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Leopards (0-9) got off the a good start, outscoring the Pirates (4-5) 21-14 in the first quarter as they found some easy looks off dribble drives. But Whitworth outscored La Verne 36-12 in the second quarter as Douglas and Harwood went combined 11-of-12 from the field in the frame to take a 50-33 lead at the break and never looked back. The Pirates were 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) as a team in the quarter.

The Pirates cooled off in the second half but the Leopards coud not make headway.

Bishop finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Cobb also chipped in 15 points and Osburn had 12. Alexa Withers led all players with 10 rebounds and scored six points.

The Leopards begin SCIAC play at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Redlands.
