Women's Basketball falls to Redlands 73-53

LA VERNE, Calif. — Noelle Cobb and Faye Osburn combined for 30 points but the La Verne women's basketball team lost the rebounding battle and lost 73-53 on Wednesday night at Sports Science and Athletic Pavilion.

Cobb scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds for La Verne (2-19, 2-10 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). Osburn tallied 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting and dished out four assists.

But Redlands (11-10, 8-4) had the decided edge on the boards, outrebounding the Leopards 37-22 to limit La Verne's opportunities. And the Bulldogs used the extra possessions efficiently, making 24 of 47 field goals (51.1 percent) with 20 of the makes coming off assists.

To compound the matters for La Verne, every call seemed to go the Redlands' way as the Bulldogs attempted a whopping 37 free throws to La Verne's 14.

Redlands's Jade Cheldelin and Reyna Ta'amu led all players with 19 points apiece. Cheldelin grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and Ta'amu added five rebounds and five assists. Courtney Chen finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

The Bulldogs opened up a 14-point lead with 2:53 left in the quarter and looked to be running away with it. But the Leopards closed the frame on a 11-4 run to trim the deficit to 44-37 and a layup by Cobb to open the fourth quarter got the Leopards within five points. However, Redlands responded with a 9-3 streak to go back up by double digits.

The Leopards are back in action on Saturday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
