Kurahashi scores ULV record 11 three-pointers, Leopards set points record

LA VERNE, Calif. – Bailey Kurahashi could not be stopped.

The junior from Torrance caught fire in the third quarter knocking down six threes on her way to setting a new single-game program record 11 three-pointers, leading the University of La Verne women's basketball team to a 135-84 win over the Saint Katherine Firebirds Wednesday afternoon.

The 135 points by the Leopards breaks the school record set in 2012 of 113 in a win over Pomona-Pitzer. Kurahashi breaks Kelly Kika's record of nine three-pointers set in that same game. The Leopards' point total ties the fourth-highest in NCAA Division III history and the 74 points scored in the second half ties for the second most in a half in DIII.

The Leopards finished with 22 three-pointers as a team the second-most in school history, behind only Kika's 2012 team that set an NCAA DIII record 26 three-pointers in the win over Pomona-Pitzer.

Kurahashi set the record with 6:49 left to play from the left wing on a dish from Mackenzie Bell to put La Verne up 116-68.

"It's outstanding," said Head Coach Jason Pruitt. "She did a great job tonight, she focused, she's put the work in before and after practice and found her rhythm."

After knocking down three three-pointers in the first quarter, Kurahashi got hot again midway through the third quarter knocking down four of five three-point attempts to extend the Leopards' lead to 39 points.

The guard finished with 41 points, a career-high, in the win. She also added three assists and three rebounds.

Six Leopards finished in double figures in the win.

Senior Kristi Sakamoto had a big day, finishing with a career-high 15 points while knocking down four three-pointers.

Clarissa Perez scored 18 points with a pair of three-pointers with three assists and three rebounds. Senior Kayla Chism had a solid game, scoring 11 points off 5-6 shooting from the field and grabbed eight boards.

Nyjeeiah Ganan and Aunisha Leffridge both had big games off the bench scoring ten points apiece. Leffridge finished with a team-high nine rebounds

Jazmyn Lacy led the Firebirds with 21 points and Damika Finley-Ponds added 17 points.

Season Impact: The Leopards improve to 5-13 overall.

Next Game: The Leopards return to SCIAC action this Saturday when they travel to Occidental. Tip-off against the Tigers is set for 4 p.m. at Rush Gymnasium.
