Women's Basketball wins third straight

LA VERNE, CA — Monica Garcia Silva led all players with 28 points and the University of La Verne Women's Basketball team took control in the final minutes of the game to beat the visiting Northern New Mexico Eagles 78-67 Monday afternoon in The Tents.

Season Impact

The Leopards pick up their third straight win and improve to 5-3 overall this season. The Eagles fall to 1-13 overall.

Stat Leaders

Garcia Silva nearly added her third double-double of the season grabbing a team-high nine boards to go with her 28 points. The junior also added four steals and a block. Garcia Silva leads the SCIAC with 20.0 points per game.

Jazzlyn Johnson finished in double figures for the fifth straight game, scoring 17 points with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Sharpshooter Bailey Kurahashi added three buckets from beyond that arc in the win to finish with 14 points. The senior currently ranks third in the conference with 23 made three-pointers.

The Leopards capitalized off of Northern New Mexico's turnovers, turning them into 31 points.

Hannah Rogers and Ronnesha Harvey both made an impact off the bench grabbing five rebounds apiece.

Northern New Mexico was led by Katelyn Yuzos' 15 points and 10 rebounds.

How it Happened

With their lead cut to just one point with 5:18 left to play, the Leopards made one final push late to pull away. After Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws, Garcia Silva, who dominated at the high post for the majority of the game, put the Leopards back up by five with one of her 12 buckets.

On the Eagles' ensuing possession Johnson poked the ball away and took it end to end, extending the lead to 72-65. Garcia Silva added two more jumpers late to help put the game away.

First Half

Garcia Silva got the Leopards off to a hot start in the opening minutes of the match, scoring six points to give her squad an early 12-2 lead.

Northern New Mexico rallied in the second quarter, going on a 10-0 run to take a 28-23 lead. The Leopards crept back in the final four minutes of the half, getting a boost of energy after Kurahashi drained her first three-pointer of the game. Just over a minute later Johnson drove past the Eagles' defenders and tied the game 28-28 with a layup.

Another bucked by Garcia Silva and a free throw by Kurahashi sent La Verne into the break up 31-31.

Next Game: The Leopards continue nonconference action on Wednesday when they host Sul Ross State at 4 p.m.
