Women's Basketball holds off Beavers

LA VERNE, CA — Brittany McDaniel created havoc for Caltech all night, Bailey Kurahashi and Monica Garcia Silva dropped 20 points apiece, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team held off the Beavers in the fourth quarter to come away with a 56-54 win Wednesday night.

Season Impact

The Leopards get back to .500 in the SCIAC, improving their conference record to 3-3 and move to 8-6 overall. Caltech drops to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The SCIAC is shaping up to be a tight finish for the four coveted spots in the postseason tournament.

McDaniel proved to be a huge headache for the Beavers' attack, using every bit of her length and height to disrupt Caltech's shots. The junior swatted away a career-high nine shots but caused many more to go off the mark. The Carson native now leads the SCIAC with 39 total blocks and 2.8 blocks per game. McDaniel also grabbed seven rebounds, scored six points, and added one steal and one assist.

Kurahashi had another big game from beyond the arc knocking down six three-pointers. One of her biggest came in the fourth quarter when she launched a 32 footer in transition to put La Verne up 51-44. Her 49 three-pointers on the season lead the SCIAC.

Garcia Silva nearly added her fifth double-double of the season, grabbing nine rebounds to go with her 20 points and also added a pair of steals and an assist. Destinee Garr had another big game off the boards, finishing with seven rebounds. Garr also dished out three assists. Clarissa Perez led La Verne with four assists and totaled five rebounds.

Grace Peng led the Beavers with 25 points.
