Women's Basketball routs Cal Lutheran

LA VERNE, CA — Clarissa Perez finished with a double-double, three Leopards finished in double figures, and the University of La Verne women's basketball earned an important 69-49 win over the Cal Lutheran Regals Wednesday night in The Tents.

Season Impact

Tonight's win kept the Leopards' postseason hopes alive. At 6-7 in SCIAC play, La Verne now sits in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Cal Lutheran and Redlands. The Leopards have beaten the Regals twice and split the season series with the Bulldogs.

Close behind the trio is Whittier with a 6-8 SCIAC record. The Leopards improve to 11-10 overall.

Perez had one of her best games of the season for the Leopards. The senior scored a game-high 23 points including three buckets from three-point range. The Los Angeles native needed just three quarters to notch her second-straight double-double grabbing her tenth rebound with 4:17 left in the third period. Perez also dished out six assists and was a perfect 4-4 from the line in the win.

Bailey Kurahashi was on fire from beyond the arc making 4-5 attempts for 12 points. The senior, who was ranked in the top-15 nationally in made three-pointers before the game, moves her season total to 66. Kurahashi now sits at fifth all-time in the La Verne record books with 155 career made three-pointers.

Junior Brittany McDaniel added another big defensive game for the Leopards. The Carson native finished with six rebounds, five defensively, and a pair of blocks. McDaniel entered Wednesday's game ranking in the top-10 in blocked shots per game and in the top-20 in total blocked shots.

Freshman point guard Jazzlyn Johnson led the Leopards off the bench with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Monica Garcia Silva had a big game off the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds in the win.

Haley Tyrell and Kayla Watterson led Cal Lutheran with 11 points and 10 points respectively.

Next Game

The Leopards take a break from SCIAC action this Saturday when they host the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs at 1 p.m. The Leopards will recognize seniors Angie Steel, Perez, and Kurahashi in a brief pregame ceremony.
