PASADENA, CA — Monica Garcia Silva scored a team-high 18 points but the University of La Verne women's basketball team couldn't overcome an off shooting night from the floor and line, falling to Caltech 59-53.

Season Impact

With the loss, the Leopards are eliminated from SCIAC Postseason contention. The Leopards at best can finish in a three-way time for fourth place in the SCIAC but will lose tiebreakers to both Redlands and Whittier.

La Verne drops to 12-12 overall and 6-9 in SCIAC play. The Beavers improve to 10-14 overall and 4-11 in the conference.

How it Happened

The Beavers got off to hot shooting in the first quarter, shooting 64.3 percent from the field compared to just 21.7 percent for the Leopards to take a 19-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

The Leopards benefitted from Caltech's own shooting woes in the second quarter to cut the deficit to five points heading into the break.

La Verne twice got to within five points of the Beavers lead late in the fourth, first after a Garcia Silva jump shot with 1:03 left to play and against with 10 seconds left after a Jazzlyn Johnson layup but would get no closer.

Garcia Silva finished with a game-high 11 rebounds to notch her eighth double-double of the season.

Next Game

The Leopards wrap up the 2018-19 season Saturday at 2 p.m. at Chapman.
