Contreras leads Women's Golf at SCIAC No. 1

BEAUMONT, Calif. — Playing close to home, Kirsten Contreras shot a two-round score of 170 to lead the University of La Verne women's golf team at the first SCIAC tournament of the season at the Morongo Golf Club.

The Beaumont native carded an opening round of 87 on Saturday and cut four strokes in the second round to come in with an 83 today. She sank four birdies on the tournament, which was good for fifth most out of all competitors, and fared well on par-5 holes where she was 1-over for the weekend.

La Verne finished eighth as a team (419-421=840).

Morgan Malloy shot a total of 198 (94-104) to finish 34th.

Jillian Hughes, Valerie Lopez and Nadira Fatah all made their La Verne debuts. Hughes and Lopez rounded out La Verne's scoring with scores of 233 (117-116) and 239 (121-118), respectively.

The Leopards are back in action on Feb. 29-March 1 one at Cougar Invitational in San Marcos.
