The University of La Verne women's soccer team opened its 2009
season with a 7-0 home win against Benedictine University (IL)
Sunday at Ben Hines Field. Senior forward Falisha Ramirez had
a part in six of the seven goals scored during the match.
The Leopards got on the board early thanks to a goal from Veronica
Wilhelm off a Ramirez assist. Ramirez would record a goal herself
five minutes later on a long assist from defender Jessica Schob. In
the 18th minute, Ramirez found the back of the net for a second
time on an assist from sophomore Morgan Melanson. Midfielder Megan
Dean got in on the action with a goal in the 25th minute, giving
the Leopards a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
Ramirez would hook up again with Wilhelm in the 51st minute,
giving Wilhelm her second goal and Ramirez her second assist of the
match. Ramirez would then score the final two goals in a span of
four minutes, creating a scoring opportunity for herself and then
finishing an assist from teammate Cody Sparling.
La Verne outshot the Eagles 27-2, resulting in 10 saves for
Benedictine goalie Melissa Hernandez.
Ramirez continued her momentum from a year ago, as she finished
the 2008 season with First Team All-Conference honors last year and
led the SCIAC in scoring with 19 goals.
The Leopards will take 10 days off before they jump into
conference play with a home game against the Tigers from Occidental
College. The match will begin at 4 pm at Ben Hines Field.
