La Verne slips in women's soccer matchup with Chapman

LA VERNE- The University of La Verne women's soccer squad encountered a setback Wednesday, falling 3-1 to Chapman University.

The Leopards (6-6-1, 3-3-1 SCIAC) held off the Chapman (7-5, 4-3 SCIAC) offense until the 38th minute of play when Panther striker Val Sobol directed a header into the back of the net off a corner kick. Chapman struck again in the 52nd minute, but La Verne answered quickly. Senior defender Katie Careaga deflected a shot from senior forward Marisella Macias into the goal six minutes later to cut the Panther lead to one. Another Chapman goal, this time off a free kick, put the game out of reach in the 65th minute.

Chapman held a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots attempted, with both teams putting four on goal. Careaga and Macias took four and three shots, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Delanie Pacheco recorded one save.

The Leopards will play Pomona-Pitzer in a SCIAC matchup Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
