Women’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — An early strike by Bri Pinal and a dagger from Kirsten Bergseth lifted Cal Lutheran to a 2-0 win over the University of La Verne women's soccer team on Wednesday night at William Rolland Stadium.

How it happened: The Regals converted their first chance of the night in the fifth minute into a goal. Bianca Deardorff crossed one into the box and Pinal was there to finish it off to give the Regals a 1-0 lead.

Cal Lutheran kept the pressure up. Deardorff nearly got on the board herself when she hit the post in the ninth minute and the Regals got off six more shots before La Verne had another one in the 22nd minute.

The Leopards played better in the second half, outshooting the Regals, 11-4. La Verne had a handful of chances over the top late in the game, but could not piece together a truly dangerous threat.

Cal Lutherna took advantage of La Verne's high pressure and sealed it in the 88th minute. Sierra Duarte penetrated into the box from the left side and pulled it back to Bergseth, who slotted into the left corner to make it 2-0.

What it means: La Verne drops to 3-5-1 in SCIAC play (5-7-1 overall) and stays in sixth place. The Leopards are four points behind fourth place Redlands, who has a game in hand. With three games remaining against teams ahead of them, the Leopards still have time to make a move.

Up next: La Verne returns to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when it travels to first-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-2-0 SCIAC).
