Women’s Soccer drops 1-0 decision to Redlands

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne dropped a hard fought, 1-0 decision to Redlands on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

Lihini Weerasinghe collected a loose ball on the edge of the six-yard box after a corner kick and scored what turned out to be the game-winner with in 69th minute.

After a tight, scoreless first half, La Verne commanded the play in the second but just could not break through with a goal. La Verne earned five corner kicks to Redlands' one in the second half and forced Redlands goalkeeper Lexi Felix to make three saves.

In one sequence early in the second half, the Leopards earned three corner kicks in a span of 50 seconds to threaten the Bulldog goal. But a Lauren Toneck header was cleared away at the goal line with a header, a Cassidy Schweiger shot veered just right and the Leopards could not find the back of the net.

Jessica Hernandez also got a headed opportunity off a corner in the 76th minute but that attempt was also blocked.

La Verne drops to 6-10-1 overall and 4-8-1 in SCIAC play. Redlands improves to 9-6-2 and 6-5-2.

La Verne returns to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Whittier. It is the the final home match of the season and La Verne's five seniors (Audriana Arceneaux, Deanna Doss, Delanie Pacheco, Natalie Vasquez and JJ Weaver) will be honored with a brief pre-match ceremony.
