Women’s soccer plays to scoreless draw with UC Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The University of La Verne women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon at Lower East Field.

With the tie, the Leopards move to 1-1-1 while the Banana Slugs stand at 0-4-1.

The two squads were more evenly matched today than in the team's first meeting a week ago when La Verne thoroughly dominated the play en route to a 3-1 victory.

The Leopards held a slight edge in overall shot attempts, outshooting the Banana Slugs, 19-14.

But the Leopards held a decided advantage in the 20-minute overtime, in which they got off five shots while holding UC Santa Cruz to just one.

Cassidy Schweiger had two looks at the goal in the first overtime. Her first shot came in the 95th minute but was blocked and UC Santa Cruz goalkeeper Selina Davila Oliver saved another attempt in the 99th minute.

Carlee Chien went for it in the closing seconds of the match, but her shot sailed just high.

La Verne goalkeeper Heather Seman turned away a total of five shots and came up with a huge save to stave of the defeat for the Leopards as she blocked Sandra Parhami's headed shot in the 88th minute.

Olivera had six saves for the Banana Slugs.

Schweiger and Tatiana Raygoza combined for nine shots with four of them on goal to lead the Leopards' attack. Kelsea Varner, Idalys Martinez and Jessica Hernandez each had two shots.

Olivia Dobbs launched four shots to lead UC Santa Cruz.

The Leopards return to action tomorrow against Whitworth at 12:30 p.m. in Santa Cruz for a neutral site game.
