Hernandez strikes twice, Women’s Soccer tops Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. — Jessica Hernandez struck for two goals to carry the University of La Verne women's soccer team past Chapman, 2-0, on Saturday at Wilson Field.

Hernandez opened the scoring when she tucked away a corner kick from Cassidy Schweiger in the 16th minute. Hernandez and Schweiger also linked up for the game winner in the Leopards' 2-1 win against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.

The sophomore from Chino Hills then added an insurance marker in the 51st minute on an assist from Kelsea Varner.

With the win, the Leopards improve to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the SCIAC. Chapman falls to 4-4-0 and 1-3-0).

Hernandez has been remarkably efficient in her last two games. She put all four of her shots on goal today and put both of her shots on target on Wednesday, scoring three goals on .500 shooting.

While Hernandez took care of the scoring for the Leopards, the defense suffocated Chapman's attack. The Panthers didn't get off its first shot until the 37th minute and didn't even test La Verne goalkeeper Jasmine Valadez, who recorded her second clean sheet without making a save. La Verne outshot Chapman, 10-5.

Varner and Cambria Smith each had two shot attempts for the Leopards.

Kristin Kleinow made three saves for Chapman.

La Verne returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
