La Verne drops to CMS on late goal

LA VERNE, Calif. — Remi Edwards scored with just over 90 seconds remaining in the match and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beat the University of La Verne women's soccer team, 1-0, on Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium.

Despite the Athenas dominating the shot count, the Leopards defended well, made the right plays and picked their spots on counter attack.

But one momentary lapse cost the Leopards. Darrah Shields picked out a wide open Ellen Berkley at the far post and Berkley dropped a header right in front of the goal towards Remi Edwards, who slotted it in the winner.

La Verne falls to 5-7-2 overall and 3-6-1 in SCIAC play. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improves to 9-4-3 and 6-2-2.

The Leopards had a pair of good chances in the second half. Tatiana Raygoza had a shot turned away by Kelly McConnell in the 57th minute and a lobbed header by Jessica Hernandez was just soft enough for McConnell grab after backtracking.

The Leopards return to action at home on Wednesday against Chapman. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
