Cobian Named SCIAC Athlete of the Week

LA VERNE, Calif. — Alina Cobian has been named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Cobian led the undefeated Leopards to a 2-1 win over the Whittier College Poets, scoring the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in the game.

"Alina is someone who holds down the backline for us, and when we sent her up at the end of the game she did her job and put the ball away," said Head Coach Lauryn Pehanich. "Centerbacks don't always get the credit they deserve so I'm very happy she's getting this well-earned recognition."

With the game tied 1-1, Katherine Obregon lined up for a corner kick and sent the ball to the far side of the box where Cobian headed it in for the lead.

The Leopards, with a 5-0-2 overall record and a 2-0-2 SCIAC record, are the only undefeated team remaining in the conference.

Cobian is the second Leopard to be named SCIAC Athlete of the Week this season. Senior Jessica Hernandez won the honor earlier this year after scoring overtime game-winning goals against both St. Catherine and UC Santa Cruz.

Next Game: The Leopards head to Pasadena today for their first ever first game ever against the Caltech Beavers at 4 p.m.
