Women's soccer draws with Whittier

LA VERNE, CA — Alina Cobian connected with Cambria Smith to give the Leopards an early 1-0 lead and the University of La Verne women's soccer team controlled the tempo for most of the first half during their match with Whittier College Saturday night.

But the Poets evened the game in the 61st minute and neither team could break the stalemate in extra time, ending the game in a 1-1 tie.

Goals

La Verne got on the board in the 16th minute when Cobian sent a long pass from the Leopards' side of the field into the box. Smith fended off a defender and poked the ball past the keeper for the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Poets got on the board when Maiquel Vasquez sent a long cross into the box from the right side to a charging Miranda Yzabal who tapped the ball in for the equalizer.

Overtime

Neither team was able to get quality chances in the overtime periods, leading to the Leopards' second tie of the season.

Season Impact

The Leopards move to 0-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in SCIAC play. The Poets now stand at 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.

Next Game

La Verne continues SCIAC play on Wednesday, September 19 at home against the Redlands Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
