CLAREMONT, CA — Amaris Sherlock put away the only goal of the game and the University of La Verne women's soccer team scored an impressive win Saturday afternoon on the road against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas.
From the Coach
"It was a complete team effort today. Everyone on the field played together and the interaction from our bench kept us going," said Head Coach Lauryn Pehanich. "We didn't change much of our game plan, we just put it together today as a group and everyone did their part."
Play of the Game
Smith sent a cross to the middle of the box to Andrea Story who fended off a defender to get a foot on the ball. Amaris Sherlock was ready, sending a dart past the diving Athenas' keeper for the difference maker.
Jasmine Valadez was solid in front of the net, grabbing four saves in the win. She was aided by solid backline play from the Leopards who prevented counter attacks from the Athenas in the first half, and fended off a desperate Claremont-Mudd-Scripps attack in the second half.
The Leopards improve to 2-7-2 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play. The Athenas, who came into the game tied for second place in the SCIAC, fall to 7-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference.
The Leopards return home next Wednesday, October 10 to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 7 p.m.
