Women's Soccer Dominates Caltech

LA VERNE, CA — Three different Leopards found the back of the net and the University of La Verne women's soccer team dominated the Caltech Beavers in a 3-0 win Wednesday night.

Katherine Obregon had an outstanding game, finishing with one goal and one assist in the win. The junior got La Verne on the board in the 33rd minute when she lined up for a free kick over 50 yards out from the goal. The Lakewood native unleashed a booming kick that bounced just in front of the keeper and over her head for the opening 1-0 lead.

The Leopards took a 3-0 lead in the second half when Obregon came through with a second long-distance ball, this time with a strike from 35 yards out near the sideline. She sent a perfect pass into the box to a charging Gizzel Sulca. The sophomore lept and tapped the ball in just before Caltech's keeper could get her hands on it.

Vivian Ramirez added the play of the game with 20 seconds left in the opening half. The junior from Santa Ana drove down the field and with a player on her, launched a shot from near the sideline. Ramirez's strike reached the opposite side of the net to give La Verne a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Leopards' defense thwarted any chance of a Caltech attack and didn't allow a shot on goal all night.

La Verne picks up their first SCIAC win of the season and improves to 2-6-1 overall 1-3-1 in conference play. The Beavers fall to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in SCIAC action.
