CMS Tops Pomona-Pitzer In Championship Match

Top seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps punctuated its reign atop the conference in women's tennis by capturing the 2013 SCIAC Championship, topping cross-street rival Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 in the championship match Saturday at Pauley Tennis Complex.

CMS took two of three doubles matches against the Sagehens and posted victories in five of the six singles contests - each in straight sets - en route to earning its second consecutive league crown.  The Athenas are ranked second in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Poll and will head into NCAA Regional play undefeated at 28-0.  Pomona-Pitzer, ranked No. 10 in the ITA Division III Poll, have won seven of its last eight matches and look to earn an at-large bid to the NCAAs.

Redlands took the third place match in a 7-2 triumph over La Verne.  The Bulldogs, ranked No. 11 nationally, swept the three doubles matches and prevailed in four of the six singles matches. Redlands is also seeking an at-large bid to postseason play.  The Leopards, ranked No. 28 nationally, notched a program-high 13 wins this season while earning their first-ever national ranking.

Whittier claimed the fifth-place match with a narrow 5-4 win over Chapman.  The two squads split their singles match-ups but the Poets took two of the three doubles contests, highlighted by the team of Adrienne Hamada and Benay Weintraub pulling out a 9-8 (4) win over the Panther squad of Sophia Duong and Genna Ford at the No. 2 slot.

No. 8 seed Caltech became the only lower seed team at the SCIAC Championships to earn a victory after posting a 6-3 win over No. 7 seed Cal Lutheran in the seventh place match.  The Beavers registered two wins in doubles and closed out by winning four singles contests against the Regals.
