Madrigal Earns Invitation to Individual Championships; Losaria/Matsuda Alternates

INDIANAPOLIS — La Verne tennis player Andrea Madrigal was selected to compete in the 2014 NCAA Division III Individual Women's Tennis Championships on May 22-24, the Division III Women's Committee announced on Wednesday.

Madrigal compiled an overall singles record of 18-2 during the regular season that featured matches against 13 nationally ranked opponents.

In the fall, Madrigal became the first Leopard to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional Championshps and earned ITA All-America status. Madrigal then went on to take sixth place at the United States Tennis Association/ITA National Small College Championships in Fort Myers, Fla.

The doubles team of Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda was named alternates for the West Region. Losaria and Matsuda went 14-7 on the season and became the first Leopard duo to reach the final at the prestigious Ojai Tennis Tournament.

Losaria and Matsuda will replace any doubles team in the West Region that scratches from the tournament.

The individual championships will consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships are based on win-loss record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

The draw for the individual championship will be released on the last day of the team championship.

The team championship will take place May 19-21 and the individual championships May 22-24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. They will be hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
