Tennis splits season-opening trip to NorCal

OAKLAND, Calif. — The University of La Verne tennis team opened the 2016 season with a resounding 9-0 win over UC Santa Cruz on Saturday and dropped a 6-3 decision to NCAA Division II Holy Names on Sunday

Freshmen doubles duo of Savannah Fisher and Madison Madewell kicked off the season with an 8-0 shutout at No. 3 doubles and the Leopards rolled.

Janae Chinn and Shenelle Trujillo followed up Fisher and Madewell's win with an 8-2 victory over Zoe Brook and Stephanie Graziano and Bridget Etchegaray and Savanah Goode wrapped up the doubles portion of the match with a 9-7 win over Sylvia Brummitt and Islay Fossett at No. 1 doubles.

Chinn clinched the match for La Verne with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brook. The Leopards' only tests came at Nos. 1 and 6 singles but Etchegaray and Fisher both came up with gritty victories after falling in the first sets. Etchegaray beat Brummitt, 6-7(4), 6-0, 1-0(8) at the top of the ladder and Fisher finished the match with a 6-7(3), 6-4, 1-0(8) win over Amy Leslie at No. 6.

The Leopards got off to a good start against the Hawks as they claimed two doubles wins, but only managed one in the singles portion in a 6-3 loss.

After the Hawks jumped out to an early lead with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, Etchegaray and Goode beat Leticia Vieira and Chelsea Smithback, 8-4, at No. 1 and Chinn and Trujillo defeated Stella Dominik and Rutendo Gwaze, 8-4, at No. 2 to give the Leopards a 2-1 advantage going into singles competition.

But Bautista leveled the match with a 6-3, 6-1 over Areli Martinez at No. 6 and the Hawks never looked back. The Leopards didn't go down easily as Etchegaray, Chinn and Trujillo all took their opponents to three sets before falling.

Savanah Goode got La Verne's lone singles win over Vieira at No. 2.
