CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne tennis team took the first two doubles matches against Arizona Christian but dropped five singles matches in a 6-3 loss to the Firestorm on Thursday afternoon at the Claremont Club.
La Verne falls to 3-6 overall.
The Leopards fell behind early in every doubles match but Bridget Etchegaray and Savanah Goode won eight straight games for an 8-1 win over Desiree Jackson and Desiree Curiel at No. 1 and Shenelle Trujillo and Janae Chinn followed with an 8-3 win over Mikayla Morgan and Iulia Marcenco at No. 2.
But the Firestorm turned the tables on the Leopards in singles, winning four straight to clinch the match. Morgan beat Goode at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1, Tia Okano topped Chinn, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 and Jackson defeated Etchegaray, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 to put the Leopards on their heels, and Marcenco got the clincher at No. 5, beating Areli Martinez, 6-3, 6-1.
Madison Madewell picked up the lone singles win for the Leopards. The freshman won a tough first set against Curiel, 7-5, and cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set.
The Leopards return to action next Friday against Texas-Tyler at the Claremont Club.
