Tennis falls to Washington College, 8-1

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne tennis team was tough in doubles play against Washington College but could not maintain its intensity in singles as it lost, 8-1, to the Shorewomen on Sunday afternoon at the Claremont Club.

La Verne falls to 3-8 while Washington College improves to 2-1.

Shenelle Trujillo and Janae Chinn got the Leopards off to a good start with an 8-5 win over Julie Lazer and Rachel Martinez at No. 2 doubles but the Shorewomen claimed tightly contested matches at Nos. 1 and 3 to grab the momentum and parlayed it to a singles sweep.

Closest singles contests game at No. 1 and No. 4. Etchegaray fell, 6-2, 6-3, to Weaver at the top of the ladder and Trujillo was competitive in the first set against Filiopoulos at No. 4 but lost, 6-4, 6-1.

The Leopards are back in action on March 25 against Lewis and Clark at the Claremont Club.
