CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne tennis team grabbed two doubles wins but lost momentum in singles in a 6-3 loss to Cal Lutheran on Friday afternoon at the Claremont Club.
La Verne falls to 4-12 overall and 2-3 in SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran improves to 10-3 and 2-2.
The Regals got the first doubles win at No. 3 but the Leopards stormed back to take a 2-1 advantage. Bridget Etchegaray and Janae Chinn combined to beat Emily Werman and Gianna Cupo, 8-4, at No. 1 and Savanah Goode and Shenelle Trujillo topped Sarah Seeman and Shelby Kubota at No. 2.
But the Leopards could not sustain their momentum in singles play. Chinn grabbed a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 for La Verne, but the victory came too late as the Regals swept the rest of the matchups.
Savannah Fisher got a good start at No. 6, beating Annette Sousa 6-0 in the first set, but lost the last two sets. Goode claimed her first set against Sarah Seeman but also lost in three sets.
The Leopards honored the careers of seniors Areli Martinez and Trujillo with a brief pregame ceremony.
The Leopards are back in action at the annual Ojai Tennis Tournament on April 21-24.
