Tennis tops Occidental, 6-3, at SCIAC Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The University of La Verne tennis team defeated Occidental, 6-3, to advance to the fifth place match of the 2016 SCIAC Women's Tennis Championships at the Pauley Tennis Complex on Saturday.

The Leopards dropped a 5-1 decision to Cal Lutheran on Friday that set up the match with Tigers. That match at Thousand Oaks was played to decision due to inclement weather.

La Verne swept the doubles portion against Oxy and Janae Chinn won the clincher at No. 3 singles over Lucy Malloch.

Chinn teamed up with Bridget Etchegaray at No 1 doubles to beat Samantha Farrell and Keliani Bonis-Ericksen to complete the doubles sweep. Savanah Goode and Shenelle Trujillo topped Lauren Hutkin and Nicole Castro, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles and Savannah Fisher and Areli Martinez defeated Andrea Clawson and Isabella Korfmann, 8-2, at the third flight.

The singles portion was closer as the Tigers took three matches, including the top two flights. But Martinez topped Hutkin, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 and Chinn beat Malloch, 6-1, 6-0,  to seal the win for La Verne and Fisher added a 6-1, 6-2 win over Clawson at No. 6.

The Leopards will take on Caltech at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
