Jumpers impress at Rossi Relays

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Nick Gonsalves of the University of La Verne track and field team finished third overall in the 100 meters out of 40 competitors at the Rossi Relays, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.

Gonsalves finished first among non-Division I runners and was behind only a pair of sprinters from USC. He finished with a time of 10.98 seconds.

Freshman Josh Francis finished ninth in the event at 11.32 and Robert Oshodin just missed out on a top-10 finish with an 11.37.

James Francis took third in the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet (1.83m). Jacob Lopez and Jacob Pavlovics (5-06.00; 1.68m) finished tied for fifth. Francis also finished ninth overall in the long jump (19-08.00; 5.99m).

Chris Gura notched a couple of fourth-places finishes in the shot put (42-11.50; 13.09m) and the hammer (144-04; 43.99m).

A trio of Leopards finished top-10 in the javelin throw. Jason Nicholls got sixth with a throw of 135-06 (41.30m) and Pavlovics was right behind at 135-01 (41.17m). Lopez was ninth at 133-03 (40.62).

A pair of jumpers impressed for La Verne. Angelyn Caldwell finished sixth in the high jump among 25 competitors with a leap of 4-09.75. Caldwell cleared 1.42m and 1.47m in first attempts, but just fell shy of 1.52m. Catalina Lee Kim, a freshman finished fourth overall among 32 competitors in the long jump (16-01.50; 4.91m)

Sprinters had good days as well. Tiahna Gillon came in fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.48 and Kimmy Kabluyen finished 10th with a time of 12.89 seconds.

Taylor Bernhard and Taylor Schulze tied for second place in the pole vault. Both cleared a height of 10.06-00.

Christiana Coughlin finished fourth in the javelin (113-11; 34.73m) and Jaclyn Castleberry recorded top-10 finishes in the shot put (33-01.25, sixth), the discus (112-03, fourth) and the hammer (119-01, ninth).

La Verne hosts the first SCIAC Multi-Dual meet of the season this Saturday at Ortmayer Stadium and Campus West Multipurpose Field.
