Track and Field sweeps SCIAC Multi-Dual 1

LA VERNE, Calif. — The University of La Verne men's and women's track and field teams swept Caltech, Cal Lutheran and Chapman at the first SCIAC Multi-Dual meet of the season at Ortmayer Stadium on Saturday.

In a meet that also featured Pomona-Pitzer, the men claimed nine events while the women took eight.

Freshman Josh Francis shined in his SCIAC debut, winning the 200 meters and the 400 meters at 50.26 and 22.14 seconds, respectively. Khayree Jones came in second in the 400 (51.39) and Nick Gonsalves was second in the 200 (22.25).

Gonsalves finished first in his signature 100 meters with a time of 10.95.

The Leopards were dominant in the field events. Derek Tang (1.85m) and Jacob Pavlovics (1.80m) went 1-2 in the high jump, Jason Nicholls won the pole vault (4.24m) and Arthur Hinojosa just edged out Jhaylyn Hall of Cal Lutheran to take the triple jump with a leap of 13.15 meters.

Andrew Carrasco (55.18m), Chris Gura (49.50m) and Matt Reinbolz (45.79m) went 1-2-3 in the hammer throw. Gura won the discus with a toss of 44.36 meters and Reinbolz was second with a throw of 41.04 meters.

Mele Halalilo and Tiahna Gillon were double winners on the women's side.

Halalilo won the hammer and the shot put with tosses of 39.56 meters and 12.22 meters, respectively, while Gillon won the 100 meters (12.18) and the 200 meters (25.55).

Jaclyn Castleberry claimed the discus with a throw of 36.47 meters and came in second behind Halalilo in the hammer (37.79m) and the shot put (10.64m).

Kimmy Kabluyen took second in the 400 meters, just six-one hundredth of a second behind the winner, and finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 26.80.

The women swept both relay events, winning the 4x100m with a time of 48.52 and the 4x400m at 4:02.34.

La Verne returns to action on Friday at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Sprints Festival.
