Track and Field teams take fourth at SCIAC Championships

LOS ANGELES — Bryan Hayes claimed the men's 10,000 meters, Taylor Schulze won the women's pole vault and Andrew Carrasco took the men's hammer throw to highlight the 2015 SCIAC Track and Field Championships, hosted by Occidental on May 1-2, for the University of La Verne.

Both the men's and the women's teams finished fourth at the championships and both finished fourth in overall standings.

Hayes became the inaugural SCIAC 10,000 meters champion with a time of 31 minutes, 20.85 seconds. Hayes also scored a point for the Leopards with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000 meters.

Schulze beat Amanda Widen of Redlands in a jump-off for the first SCIAC crown of her career. Both failed to clear the initial jump-off at 3.47 meters (11 feet, 4.5 inches) but Schulze vaulted past the next height of 3.42 meters (11-02.50) while Widen came up short after both cleared 3.37 meters (11-00.75) in regulation.

Carrasco recorded a toss of 52.11 meters (170-11) in the hammer for La Verne's lone individual win on Saturday.

A trio of school records fell on the tracks as well. Star sprinter Nick Gonsalves came in second in the men's 100 meters in a time of 10.66 seconds to break his own school record set last year and Gillon beat Dejuana Satchell's record in the women's 100 meters set in 2001 with a time of 12.02 for second place. Kimmy Kabluyen slashed nearly two seconds off her personal best in the 400 meters to set new La Verne standard at 56.84, finishing the race in second place.

Gillon added three more second place finishes in the 200 meters (25.43) and as a part of the women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Josh Francis made the podium in the men's 400 meters with a time of 48.59 and added a sixth-place finish in the 200 meters at 22.08.

Mele Halalilo finished second in the women's shot put with a toss of 12.24 meters  (40-02.00) and Christiana Coughlin finished third in the javelin wit ha throw of 40.05 meters (131-05) to highlight field events for the women.

Catalina Lee Kim notched a pair of fourth-place finishes in the women's 100 meter hurdles (15.76) and the long jump (5.12 meters; 16-09.75).

The Leopards will get a two more chances at Occidental Invitational (May 9) and Redlands Last Chance (May 14) to further improve their times before the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 21-23.
